The modern form of Shave Ice has its origins in Yokohama, Japan and due to its popularity by the 1920’s, shave ice became a common attraction in stores throughout Japan. It was imported to America by Japanese immigrants who brought it along with them when they came to Hawaii to work on the sugar plantations. Shave Ice became immensely popular and is now a part of the Hawaiian culture.

Hawaiian Shave Ice is an ice-based dessert made by shaving blocks of ice, creating a product of very fine ice that appears snow-like. Flavored syrups are added to the ice, which are absorbed by the ice rather than surrounding it. A properly made shave ice product rarely requires a straw, since the flavors are in the ice and not at the bottom of the cup. Fresh fruit can be added as well as ice cream at the base of the cup and condensed milk on top.
